Young Doks: One Of Us

Work in Progress-talk

The director Yael Reuveny plans a really personal project:» We started school in summer 1985. On our first day at school we put up a little show for our parents, describing how we are building our country. One of us built a house, another one planted a tree. ‘My land of Israel is beautiful and blossoming! Who built it? All of us together!’ we sang in our high pitched voices. We were »Sabras«, the first generation of Jews to be born in Israel. Unlike our parents, who were watching our little show proudly, we were born here, free of Diasporic identities. Our only language was Hebrew. Our parents were born in Poland, Iraq, Yemen, Iran, Romania , Germany and we were the result of this amazing mix – born in this new land of the Jews that generations before us were hoping and praying for. We were a dream come true. Almost 30 years later, I, the director of the film, will go on a journey to find the other 32 boys and girls, who started first grade with me in 1985. What kind of men and women are we now? Did we fulfill that promise that we made? Are we building a country, like in that song we sang in on the first day of school?
