In The Cut

Feature Film | GB, US, AU 2003 | 119' | English OV

With IN THE CUT Jane Campion proved that the erotic thriller genre can be much more than naked skin and a shabby whodunnit. The plot is the only thing that feels vaguely familiar: commitment-averse Frannie (Meg Ryan) staggers into a murder investigation and connects with a haggard cop (Mark Ruffalo). But what sounds rather conventional is just the starting point for Campion to explore interpersonal abysses with hypnotic glances. With both a morbid fascination and a deep respect for her characters Campion surveys the battlefield of the sexes and shines a light on women scarred by neuroses, fears, trauma and smouldering hate and on insecure men, as their lack of understanding for each other cuts deeper than any blade could.
