Höhenstrasse

TV-Movie | AT 2016 | 90' | German OV with English subs

ORF’s country-life crime procedural, Landkrimi, has set standards for going against the grain in an established serial TV format. Following major silver-screen directors like Michael Glawogger, Wolf-gang Murnberger and Andreas Prochaska, David Schalko (BRAUNSCHLAG, OLD MONEY) now de-livers his take on that genre – resulting in what is likely the most subversive installment of the series. Rather than going off into the country, Schalko stays in suburbia. Rather than real police investigators, his protagonists Roli and Ferdinand are two con men posing as police. They run their scheme on Wie-ner Höhenstraße, stopping law-abiding, unsuspecting citizens and using these people’s respect for authority against them to swindle them out of their money. One night, the situation spirals out of con-trol, and the two become entangled in an increasingly absurd kidnapping that makes them perpetra-tors and investigators at the same time. Reveling in local-color humor, Schalko’s depiction of Austrian society is equally surprising and relentlessly sarcastic.
