Les Salauds

Feature Film | FR, DE 2013 | 100’ | French OV with German subs

LES SALAUDS could have easily become a flawless neo-noir. All the ingredients are there: the mysterious death of his brother-in-law prompts Marco (Vincent Lindon) to leave his cargo ship and come ashore to investigate the dark circumstances. He encounters a wall of silence and hidden complicity that obscures what has happened. Meanwhile, in the background, rich, revolting Edouard (Michel Subor) keeps pulling the strings the bereaved have become hopelessly entangled in. However, Claire Denis has never been into flimsy incrimination and speculative abuse of her characters just for show, as is typical for the genre. The easy way is therefore not the one she takes, even in her most plot-driven film to date. Devoting less attention to rough-and-tumble guys who take a moral sledgehammer to questions of good and evil, her interest is more focused on the muted suffering of the women trapped in a vicious circle of financial and sexual exploitation.
