Hedda

Feature Film | DE 2016 | 102’ | German OV

Coming home from their honeymoon, fun-loving Hedda and the young doctor Jorgen move into a lavish mansion Jorgen has built for his newly-wedded wife. But the ghosts of the past are not far behind: Jorgen has overextended his finances with the mansion, and his promotion by professor Brack is not as safe as he thought. And when former lovers of both partners join them in their new home, the crisis culminates in a dinner party from hell – and not all of them will emerge alive. Veteran Germanfilmmaker Andreas Kleinert took on Henrik Ibsen’s timeless marriage drama HEDDA GABLER and delicately transported it into the present day. Many of the subconscious conflicts of the original are brought to the surface, as is Ibsen’s subtle sexual psychology. The result is a claustrophobic piece of intimate theatre on TV, with expressive handheld camerawork, theatrical inter-titles and a tour-de-force ensemble that is able to follow up on all the promises of the original setup.
