Beat Beat Heart

Feature Film | DE 2016 | 86’ | German OV with English subs

Kerstin lives in the countryside, works on a decrepit cinema and still dreams of her ex-boyfriend Thomas, when her mother Charlotte comes for a visit. She just became an involuntary single herself in her mid-50s. As if this weren’t enough neuroses already, there’s also a quarrelling neighbours couple – and Charlotte has Kerstin’s experimental flatmate Maya teach her in the ways of online dating. And both of these things lead to quite some emotional turbulence. This already award-winning debut feature is young German cinema at its best: smart, laid-back and spontaneous. With a rather loose concept for camera and editing, improvised dialogue and overlapping lines Luise Brinkmann works a small miracle in finally getting rid of all the stilted pretentiousness and all the stuffy pathos and replacing it with real feelings and the most realistic dialogue on German cinema screens since the early films of Andreas Dresen.
