The Childhood of a Leader

Feature Film | FR, UK, HU 2015 | 115’ | English OV

As an actor, Brady Corbet has previously worked with Lars von Trier, Michael Haneke, and Olivier Assayas. As a director, the 28-year-old is as ambitious as these masters of European cinema. THE CHILDHOOD OF A LEADER is loosely based on Jean-Paul Sartre’s 1939 short story of the same name. Set in the years after the First World War, this is the tale of a little boy and his escalating feud with his parents, which leads to disastrous long-term consequences for the history of the world. Shoot-ing on analog 35mm material, cinematographer Lol Crawley (45 YEARS) has created images that evoke the paintings of Rembrandt or Caravaggio, and Scott Walker has composed breathtakingly intense music for the film. Robert Pattinson stars in an unusual double role. Corbet’ s daring work was rewarded at the Venice Film Festival, where it was recognized as the best debut film and won the Best Director award in the Orizzonti section.
