TONI ERDMANN

TONI ERDMANN is winner of the Film Award NRW for Best Feature Film, which is endowed with € 10,000 by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the City of Cologne and the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and awarded for the first time in 2016.

Director: Maren Ade
Production: Janine Jackowski, Jonas Dornbach, Maren Ade, Komplizen Film

Jury’s Statement:

This is a film about role-play. A father acts out a comedy for his daughter – and thereby reveals the masquerades of life. Young corporate advisor Ines gradually leaves the role as a cool businesswoman she has so perfectly mastered. Her father coaxes her out of her shell and out of her role by re-interpreting his own role as a father in a new and surprising way – suddenly appearing before her with a scraggy wig and fake teeth. Toni Erdmann, Winfried’s alter ego, is the protagonist of a comédie humaine about generational relations, about father-daughter-feelings and about the never-ending show that is the business world. Maren Ade presents two people struggling for closeness, distance and finally love, in a film which connects absurd humour with deep humanism in a wildly idiosyncratic way. TONI ERDMANN stands alone as an artistic achievement, while at the same following a rich comedic tradition of the likes of Billy Wilder or Ernst Lubitsch. You don’t laugh about Ines and Winfried, you very much laugh and suffer with them.
