At the age of 34, Sorrentino created a strong sophomore feature notable for its intricate storytelling and visual design, which leaves an impression much like the work of a seasoned master drawing on a whole life’s œuvre. THE CONSEQUENCES OF LOVE is testament to the confidence of an auteur who found his themes and language early on, and is unafraid to express them in grand cinematic gestures. Constant collaborator Toni Servillo, with whom Sorrentino has had a career-long productive partnership in true De Niro/Scorsese fashion, shines as Titta di Girolamo, a mafia protégé of the sad countenance who spends his dreary days running errands for unscrupulous bosses – until he meets waitress Sofia (Olivia Magnani) and his dull routine is broken. Inevitably, a Kafkaesque mafia tribunal comes down hard on the weary stoic for his romantic escapade. For the audience at least, it is an enchanting experience to see how things eventually come to this end.
