Yallah! Underground

Documentay | EG, DE, CA, CZ, GB 2015 | 85' | Subtitled English

The Arab Spring brought hope, but these days the Arab world holds mostly insecurity for a generation of young underground musicians. From the Jordanian rapper and the Egypt DJ to the Palestinian folk musician and the Lebanese electro-pop artist, they all have a voice that they want to be heard calling for change – politically as well as religiously and socially. They are threatened by oppression, jail and even recurring civil wars. But inside they are all deeply impressed with the radical revolutions of 2009 to 2013, and they just refuse to give up on the hope for a fundamental change in their region. Farid Eslam, whose last film »Istanbul United« already shone a light on the Turkish uprisings of recent years, provides a glorious kaleidoscope of creative activists and dreamers from a whole range of countries for YALLAH! UNDERGROUND. He finds astonishingly similar approaches and biographies – and most of all he finds stirring rhythms and melodies that are full of determination, hope and calls to action.
