Tangerine

Feature Film | USA 2015 | 88' | OV

Christmas in Los Angeles. Just released from a short term in prison, Sin-Dee Rella learns from her best friend that her boyfriend and pimp Chester has slept with another woman in the meantime. Sin-Dee is beside herself and sets out to confront Chester – with a piece of evidence in tow. The transsexual goes looking for the person her man had his fling with, someone who happens to be a white woman »with a vagina and everything.« A fast-paced foot chase around the blocks off Santa Monica Boulevard and Highland Avenue. TANGERINE provides true-to-life and at the same time hilariously comical glimpses into the scene of transsexual prostitutes in Los Angeles. Reminiscent of the works of Harmony Korine or John Waters, Sean Baker’s first film after STARLET makes sure not to gloss over anything, yet still manages to tell a surprisingly lighthearted tale. TANGERINE was entirely shot on an iPhone, upgraded with an anamorphic lens, which actually imparts a cinemascope quality to the phone clips that makes them worthy to be shown on the silver screen.
