OVER YOUR DEAD BODY is a film adaptation of the most famous Japanese ghost story, »Yotsuya Kaidan.« In the stage play dating back to 1825, a ruthless samurai is haunted by the ghost of his murdered wife. The story has been brought to the screen before more than thirty times, but Takashi Miike manages to find a unique approach to this classic. Surprisingly, the bad boy of Japanese cinema (AUDITION) goes back to the roots of the piece in Kabuki theater. Rehearsals for a theatrical performance of YOTSUYA KAIDAN are skillfully arranged as reflections of the private lives of the two lead actors, Kosuke and Miyuki. While the two rehearse their roles on a spectacular revolving stage, the couple’s relationship ends up in pieces in the real world beyond the walls of the theater. Kosuke acts in a similarly unscrupulous way as the samurai he plays, while Miyuki slowly slips into madness. What initially looks like an unusually toned-down Miike film, eventually turns into an increasingly intense psycho-drama – with a bloody ending.
