The first image I am struck with when I think about the year 1985 is of the dry thorny field next to our school. Bleached from a long summer under the merciless middle eastern sunlight. We started school at the end of that summer with a little show we put up for our parents, describing how we are building our country. One of us built a house, one of us planted a tree. “My land of Israel is beautiful and blossoming! Who built it? All of us together!” we sang in our high pitched voices. We were “Sabras”, the first generation of Jews to be born in Israel. Unlike our parents, who were watching our little show proudly, we were born here, free of Diasporic identities. Our only language was Hebrew and it was accent-less. Our parents were born in Poland and Iraq and Yemen and Iran and Romania and Germany and we were the result of this amazing mix – born in this new land of the Jews that generations before us were hoping and praying for. We were a dream come true. Almost 30 years later, I, the director of the film, will go on a journey to find the other 32 boys and girls, who started first grade with me in 1985. What kind of men and women are we now? Did we fulfill that promise that we were? Are we building a country, like in that song we sang in on the first day of school?
