FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, SCREAM, SCHOOL OF ROCK, WESTWORLD, FARGO – these are just a few of the films currently seeing a revival as TV series. And which fan of these cult movies wouldn’t want to get more deeply engrossed in their worlds? This is especially true for FARGO (1996), Joel and Ethan Coen’s first Oscar winner, which is particularly prone to be adapted into an extensive serial narration due to its plethora of colourful minor characters that viewers would gladly learn more about. The series written by Noah Hawley (BONES) does not slavishly adhere to the original, but delightfully captures its atmosphere and creates at least as memorable characters as the motion picture did before. The greatest deviation: charismatic killer Lorne Malvo, who does not appear in the original FARGO, but is reminiscent of fellow professional hit man Chigurh from the Coens’ later film NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. Billy Bob Thornton plays Lorne with the coolness of a world-weary, cynical superhero. »Yeah, good« was Ethan Coen’s purported reaction to the series pilot – a downright enthusiastic recommendation by his standards.
