Concrete Night (Betoniyö)

Feature Film | FIN, S, DK 2013 | 96' | Subtitled English

Fourteen year old Simo lives with his taciturn mother and his petty criminal older brother Ilkka in a dismal concrete high-rise suburb of Helsinki. Ilkka is about to report to jail for a short sentence, and before that he takes his little brother once more to town, to introduce him to its world. But the secrets that await Simo there, about his mother and his brother’s accomplices, drive him to a dark place – for which he has to pay an enormous price. Writer-director Pirjo Honkasalo takes this adaptation which seems destined for a social drama and turns it into a poetic vision through a feast of images, mostly in black and white with brutal contrast and some blotches of cautious, sparse colours added. This modern version of CRIME AND PUNISHMENT, both psychologically and philosophically profound, is not told through long dialogue scenes, but by a precise soundscape and evocative music, subtle performances and symbolic dream sequences.
