20.000 Days on Earth

Dokufiction | UK 2014 | 97' | Subtitled German

From junkie punk to Renaissance man: Nick Cave’s transformation is one of the most amazing stories in the past thirty years of rock music. Who would have thought that the scrawny singer of a self-destructive Melbourne punk band (»The Birthday Party«) in the genre’s early days would come to be at the height of international acclaim in 2014: as an author, screenwriter, occasional actor, and, of course, musician. A conventional rock documentary would hardly do justice to this dazzling protagonist with a penchant for self-mythologization. British filmmakers Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard have therefore opted for a seamless blend of reality and fiction: the camera accompanies Cave on what is supposedly a psychoanalytic session, rides along in his black Jaguar around his hometown of Brighton, with people from his past (from Blixa Bargeld to Kylie Minogue) emerging in the backseat, and also shows him recording his 2013 masterpiece, PUSH THE SKY AWAY, in the south of France. The best music film of the year.
