Incompresa

Feature Film | IT 2014 | 105' | Subtitled English

Asia Argento’s first name is actually Aria, a name she shares with the main character of her latest film, INCOMPRESA. This is a clear enough cue that the actress’s third directing effort amounts to a cinematic autobiography that is only thinly veiled as fiction. And what a biography this is. The daughter of horror director Dario Argento and actress Daria Nicolodi examines her own childhood with unrelenting candour. Nine-year-old Aria’s parents are as glamorous as they are egocentric – in the film, they are a famous actor (Gabriel Garko) and a pianist (Charlotte Gainsbourg) –, and they devote very little attention to he. But the story does not turn into a tear-jerking family drama. Instead, it evolves into a liberatingly punky therapy session. As much as she is hurt by the neglect, the lack of attention also means freedom and adventure for Aria. It is worth noting that Argento collaborated on the screenplay with Barbara Alberti, whose previous writing credits include Bud Spencer and Terence Hill vehicles like I’M FOR THE HIPPOPOTAMUS as well as the scandalous sadomasochist classic, THE NIGHT PORTER.
