Though Ebba, Tomas, and their two young children have come away unscathed from the disaster, nothing is the way it used to be. An avalanche just failed to bury the Swedish family on the terrace of an Alpine restaurant. When Ebba and the children then patted down their ski suits to get the powder snow off, they realized that Tomas, the father of the family, had taken off for the mountain cabin – with his smartphone, but without thinking of his family. This betrayal of trust gradually poisons the atmosphere within the family, and the holiday steadily veers off into relationship nightmare territory. »Michael Haneke meets ‘Scenes from a Marriage’,« industry magazine Variety wrote about this Cannes festival film, which was vastly popular with audiences and critics alike this year. In his fourth feature-length picture, Ruben Östlund does indeed combine the distant, dissecting approach and black humor of the Haneke variety with the psychological sensitivity of Ingmar Bergman. As captivating as a disaster movie, but without the doomsday scenarios of Hollywood productions.
