In addition to his feature-length productions, Harmony Korine has directed more than a dozen short-form works: commercials, music videos, contributions to omnibus films, and short films, some of which develop ideas later expanded on in his feature films. The Cologne Conference presents four of Korine’s outstanding short films: LOTOS COMMUNITY WORKSHOP, ACT DA FOOL, UMSHINI WAM und SNOWBALLS.
In LOTUS COMMUNITY WORKSHOP, Korine’s contribution to the compilation film THE FOURTH DIMENSION, the incomparable Val Kilmer plays a mixture of guru, preacher, and maniac by the name of: Val Kilmer.
UMSHINI WAM, which runs fifteen minutes long, is a mix of music video and short film. The two rappers of »Die Antwoord«, a South African band, play the main roles. Propped in wheelchairs and dressed in full-body animal costumes, they get their kicks in dreary suburban neighborhoods. Their dream: to be real gangsters.
ACT DA FOOL was originally commissioned by the New York fashion label, Proenza Schouler – as is to be expected from Korine, though, clothes get to play more of a minor role in it. The story revolves around a group of young black women, who are in some ways foreshadowing the girl group from SPRING BREAKERS.
SNOWBALLS was – like ACT DA FOOL – originally commissioned by the New York fashion label, Proenza Schouler. The story revolves around two girls dressed as Navajo Indians with deformed features, wearing Proenza Schouler’s creations.
