»He can make the politically jaded feel patriotic and the cynical see hope in any situation«. says The Hollywood Reporter, praising Aaron Sorkin and his new series “The Newsroom”. The star screenwriter (THE SOCIAL NETWORK, THE WEST WING) proves again that he pens the smartest dialogue in current film and television. Sorkin’s mouthpiece is brilliant, but repulsive Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels), the disillusioned presenter of a news show who goes through a crisis and regains his old bite. It is his ex-girlfriend Mackenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer), of all people, who is supposed to help him in the process – this constellation is a perfect springboard for quick-witted banter at screwball comedy pace. Though THE NEWSROOM is about fictional characters, the HBO series’ special approach is that it unfolds against a backdrop of true events. In the pilot episode, for example, the explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon rig causes the ensuing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to burst – very literally – smack into McAvoy’s return to his old place of work.
