Barrier (Bariera)

Feature Film | PL 1966 | 77' | Subtitled English

»In spite of everything, a romantic impulse still prevails in our cynical, unidealistic generation,« the nameless protagonist in BARRIER keeps repeating. Skolimowski’s third film is the first one not to star its director in the lead role. Still, the medical student who replaces Skolimowski’s former alter ego, Andrzej Leszczyc, is a similarly nonconformist outsider and aimless drifter. He finds a kindred spirit in a pretty tram driver. Much like Federico Fellini’s 8 ½, one of Skolimowski’s favorite films, BARRIER quickly blurs the boundary between reality and fantasy. As in a dream, one surreal set blends into another: the protagonist flies off a ski jump on a suitcase (the film features several such daring stunts), eventually gets in a saber fight with a car – and a kick in the butt can very well lead to a huge explosion in “Barrier.” Alternating between cutting-edge jazz and choir music with an ecclesiastical touch, the film’s score was created by Roman Polanski’s favorite composer, Krzysztof Komeda.
