Feature Film | FR 1998 | 85' | Subtitled English

It all starts with a rat. Husband and father Jean brings this former lab animal into his bourgeois home, which then rapidly goes haywire: Son Nicolas outs himself as gay and has group sex orgies in his room. Daughter Sophie throws herself from a window, is thus confined to a wheelchair and starts practicing s/m sex. The maid and her husband act as willing sexual partner for whatever family member will have them. And mother Elaine seduces her son in order to make him straight again. Jean only sees two possibilities: Either shoot the whole damn bunch – or the rat’s gotta bite the dust. Ozon’s infamous debut feature film is an homage to his idols Buñuel and Fassbinder: A pitch-black family farce smashing every single bourgeois ideal. Hair-raising reversals, unapologetic artificiality and absurd dream sequences define this free-for-all masterpiece. With masterful style and biting humor Ozon lays the foundation for an iconoclastic career beyond all genres and conventions.
