Mondomanila

Feature Film | PHL, DE 2011 | 73' | OV

A hymn to life in the slum. A cheerful carnival of outcasts. A shameless plug for sex, drugs, and punk rock. MONDOMANILA is nothing for the faint of heart, neither for people who believe hardship in the Third World can only be addressed through well-meaning social dramas. Filipino musician and filmmaker, Khavn de la Cruz (38 years old, 33 feature films, ca. 100 shorts), dives headlong into the bustle of his hometown Manila’s slums, finding few who lament their lot, but instead many more showing determination to survive. Major protagonists include an angry dwarf, a one-armed rapper, and a pimp who is growing old. Much like the Italian mondo films of the 1960s and 1970s, this feature cares less about telling a continuous story and more about taking the audience through a series of shocking, bizarre, or simply just exotic episodes in between reality and fiction. Those who come along for the trip will be rewarded with an experience that is sure to be one of a kind.
