When Margot, who is married to cookbook author Lou, meets Daniel in a chance encounter, she immediately falls for him. To make matters worse, the attractive stranger then turns out to be her new neighbor. Margot’s life is on the verge of falling apart: torn between the emotional intimacy shared with her husband and her overwhelming desire for the mysterious artist next door, Margot struggles to come to terms with herself and find out what she really wants in life. Following her debut, AWAY FROM HER, Sarah Polley’s sophomore directorial effort is a bittersweet tragicomedy par excellence, which is likely to touch the souls of many viewers in their late 20s. In its apparent exploration of what one is to do with oneself and one’s feelings, the film keeps a delicate balance between romance, drama, the comical, and the erotic, yet never veers off into the sentimental. Polley never loses track of her characters’ reality as she leads her audience through a magically playful Toronto, a place adorned every so often with startling images and emotions that any run-of-the-mill romance would have flattened into one dimension. A gem of a film starring a captivating Michelle Williams.
