Artificial Paradises (Paraísos Artificiales)

Feature Film | BR 2012 | 96' | Subtitled English

The titular artificial paradise means both the two main locations of this film – a Brazilian beach festival with fire show and an Amsterdam rave club with light show – and the drugs that destroy the protagonists’ life. Ecstacy, LSD, weed and peyote – Djane Erika and her girlfriend Lana will take it all. Young drifter Nando meanwhile, who is the father of Erikas child, works as a drug mule – a job that his brohter takes up after him, as he is horrified to find out after his arrest. Marcos Prado, producer of masterpieces like ELITE SQUAD and BUS 174, tells his sensual fiction feature debut in a complex structure of several flashbacks and with the typical South American frankness: The characters enjoy the greatest triumphs but also have to wander through the deepest valleys. What could have been a boring problem movie has become, thanks to picturesque images and outstanding performances of the main actors, a celebration of life, which also offers some genuine paradises.
