Tahrir 2011 – The Good, the Bad and the Politician

Documentary | EGY, FR 2011 | 90' | Subtitled

The revolutionaries have gotten hold of their cameras: Tamer Ezzat, Ayten Amin and Amr Salama were personally present at the Tahrir Square in Cairo to see Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year reign end. With TAHRIR, which only returned from its World Premiere in Venice with the UNESCO-Award, they approach the Egyptian revolution from three different points of view. Their first chapter »The Good« portrays the rebellion’s heroes, with whom Tamer Ezzat revisits the central locations of their protests and shows spectacular, never before seen footage from the 18 days of resistance. In the second chapter »The Bad« Ayten Amin tries to understand how the hated police forces justify their violence against the protesters. Astonishingly she actually finds officers willing to talk about their inner conflict between obedience and sympathy for the protesters. The last part »The Politician« Amr Samara dedicates to the dictator himself – in a surprisingly humorous way. Michael Moore would be delighted by Samara’s ironic pitch »How to become a dictator in 10 easy steps«.
