Whores’ Glory

Documentary | DE, AUT 2010 | 110' | Subtitled

She prefers sex at work to sex at home, says the Thai prostitute. Back home, her husband wants to sleep with her all the time. At work, at least the times are fixed. Her colleague also likes it better in the brothel – because there are more gals to have a chat with. Michael Glawogger (WORKINGMAN’S DEATH) has talked to whores in Thailand, Bangladesh, and Mexico to take an impartial look at the sex business. He finds happiness, misery, and plain old everyday routines behind the scenes of temples of pleasure and seedy joints. The living and working conditions of the women essentially depend on the predominant religion of the country: prostitutes in Buddhist Thailand are fully integrated into society, whereas those in Muslim Bangladesh and Catholic Mexico live as outcasts. A film that destroys romantic notions of life in the red light district, but at the same time does not keep the prostitutes confined to a victim role.
