»Pretty hot you got it here« – a feisty female officer joins the German soldiers dispatched with the European Union Force in Eastern Congo and causes some disorder amongst the troops. Her investigation of a young sergeant’s assumed suicide stirs up dark secrets, and soon she faces the usual wall of silence. When the resistance within the ranks turns overwhelming, she finally has to continue her enquiry on her own account. Told with a melancholy, dark tonality that befits the location torn by civil war close to the Rwandan border, KONGO from weathered crime movie veterans Alexander Adolph (as writer) and Peter Keglevic (as director) is an unusually ambitious and politically explosive parable about the failure of the Western forces in the violent chaos of a third-world country. In the starring roles Maria Simon as an increasingly rebellious investigator is just convincing as Jörg Schüttauf as a stubborn captain.
