Bunny and the Bull

Feature Film | GBR 2010 | 101' | OV

Inspired by the works of Terry Gilliam, Michel Gondry, and Czech animation wizard Jan Švankmajer, this is a surreal road movie only happening in the mind of the protagonist. Since returning from a fateful trip across Europe with his chaotic friend Bunny, Stephen has not left his apartment again. He is a control freak who dines on lasagna from the freezer, and who painstakingly archives the strands of dental floss he has used. One day, though, when he finds that mice have been gnawing away at his foodstuffs, he has to make contact with the outside world. But even the wrapping of the fast food he gets delivered triggers memories of the traumatic voyage. Thus begins a trip into the past that screenwriter-director Paul King illustrates in one original live-action/animation film mix after another: sometimes the set pieces behind the actors are made of cardboard, or painted on paper, sometimes characters come to life through stop-motion technique, or in clay animation, or in classic animated film. King’s flood of ideas shows no sign of ebbing.
